EXTREME LOADINGS REQUIRED FOR A SEAWALL LOCATION
Floodsafe worked with IBS Engineered Products Ltd to protect the promenade at Colwyn Bay

The problem:

In 2017 we took on a contract for Conwy Borough Council to protect North Eirias Promenade at Colwyn Bay LL29 8HH. A new Promenade had been constructed and the beach reclaimed for a water sports centre. There were openings in the new sea defence wall for the slipways that needed extra protection. The entrance to the promenade, the car park and the new glass structure of the sports centre, also needed protection from coastal flooding events. The works needed to be completed out of season to reduce the risk of hazards and inconvenience to the general public.

Our solution:

Floodsafe Projects worked with the design team at IBS Engineered Products Ltd. to supply a suitable design for the extreme loadings required for the seawall. This included:

  • Demountable barriers across each of a series of 4 metre openings in the new sea defence wall at slipways and steps to the beach
  • Alterations to the curved seawall to allow the barrier system to fit within a rebate due to the loadings required.
  • A 30m span of barrier across an access point and car park

The 30m barrier was designed to cope with a gradient level increase of nearly 400mm.

The result:

The result was a secure flood defence for the promenade, suitably designed for the extreme loadings and gradient.
